In Support of Public Radio

As Salaamu Alaikum,

Praise be to Allah and mercy and peace upon all the prophets culminating with the last of the prophets, Muhammad (pbuh), and his family, his companions and upon those who follow Gods WAY until the day of judgment. As the Director of Outreach for the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center, treasurer of the Coordinating Council of Muslim Organizations, board member of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington and many other progressive organization, I know the need for effective mediums of outreach and I know how it feels to have the good work that community groups do that never reaches the mainstream network media. Sometimes it make one angry.

The Reverend T.D. Jakes once said, “Anger without action makes one bitter not better” I would add to this the word “righteous-amilus salihat” action. Muslims and other power minorities in the united states perennially bemoan their less than balanced presentation in the media. It is my deeply held conviction that there are two media outlets in Washington D.C. that provide a valuable resource to their listening audience and to the nation; those two radio stations are WAMU 88.5 fm (local NPR affiliate) and WPFW 89.3 fm (Pacifica affiliate). In the coming week these two radio stations will be conducting their on air pledge drives.

As related by Muslim the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said in a hadith “Whosoever of you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart-and that is the weakest of faith.”

Therefore, in the struggle against the fear mongering and disinformation campaign that is being vigorously waged against us all we must collectively take action, lift a finger, open our check books, take out our credit cards, deploy our pay pal accounts, or By other means necessary support these and other progressive media.

Although I don’t agree with all of the positions and ideas heard on these stations in the current climate they have served to as a credible counterweight to the run away rhetoric of the radical right. Hmmm, it seems like a lot of words start with R.

As the hadith continues, pick up the phone and call and let your voice be heard a in support and lastly if you cannot do the first two instructions from this hadith then out your heart on it and fear that you might be hanging on a branch of hypocrisy (nifaaq).

May Allah reward you for your sacrifice in the cause of freedom of speech.
