I was saddened to hear on NPR that in our beloved Indonesia that there were some 6 terrorists who allegedly were planning to bomb a church for the Easter services. Fortunately the authorities in Indonesia were able to apprehend them prior to the plans execution. Although, it is difficult to raise our collective voices for every alleged act of terrorism, this plan disturbs me severely. Although, I am a Muslim my mother is Christian and I am sure that my mother plans to attend Good Friday and Easter Sunday services. Although, I never believed that Jesus was God or died on Good Friday or rose from the dead on Sunday, I respect the right of others to believe as they would like. This is a teaching from the Holy Quran,
“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. (Al-Qur’an 2.256)
“For those who have true faith (Iman); and those who follow the scriptures of the Children of Israel, and the followers of Jesus-Isa Ibnu Maryam (pbuh) and Sabians (monotheist), whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good deeds, they will have their reward with their Lord. They will fear not, nor shall they grieve. (Al-Quran-2:62)
May Allah help us to have respect for one another while engaging in dialogue regarding our differences and may The Almighty grant peace over this weekend of celebration.
