Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center joins the voices of the Muslim community along people of other faiths in the Washington DC metropolitan area to express our deepest condolences and strongest condemnation of today’s deadly attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper in Paris,
The attackers’ invocation of the name of Allah as they were killing journalists is particularly repugnant and abhorrently insane. This action runs against the core teaching of Islam.
It has been reported that the paper had published satirical depictions and cartoons of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, a few years ago. While the cartoons were widely condemned by Muslims around the world Islam always calls upon Muslims to exercise restraint as did the Prophet Muhammad
The Quran says:
The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel evil with good
(that is, Allah ordered the faithful believers to be patient when angry,
and to excuse those who treat them badly), then in truth! Eventually,
between the other person and yourself, will grow friendship, where once
there was enmity.
But none are granted such good character except those who are patient, and none are granted it except the owner of a good moral character. Quran: 41:34-35
The Quran registers numerous quotations of attacks on the character, integrity and credibility of the Prophet. In no place does it tell Muslims to attack, threaten or kill, such a people.
The Quran says:
You shall certainly be tried and tested in your wealth and properties and
in your personal selves, and you shall certainly hear much that will hurt
your feelings, from those who received the Scripture before you (Jews and
Christians) and from those who ascribe partners to Allah, but if you
persevere patiently, and act righteously, then verily, that will be a
great show of the power of resolve on your part. Surah Al Imran (3:186)
We urge all Muslims to listen to the guidance of the Quran, as we invite Muslims and all people of faith to engage in deep and respectful dialogue. The best response to insults and attacks against Islam or any faith is patience, righteousness, dialogue and engagement toward the greater good of the society.
