Dr.Sulayman Nyang Hospitalized: Update 3/29/16

As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wabarakatuh

I went to visit our beloved Dr. Sulayman Nyang in the hospital. It turns out that he suffered a massive stroke on Wednesday, March 16th and was admitted to MedStar Washington Hospital. He was in the intensive care unit and under observation until Sunday. His condition is still critical and doctors are attempting to stabilize him.

When I went to visit him, he had been sedated and therefore was not aware of anyone in the room. On behalf of those of our leadership, I made du’a to Allah for healing and recovery for our teacher and scholar.

At Howard University alone, he must have worked on the thesis committees of at least 100 if not more doctoral and masters students. I am one such beneficiary of his wisdom as he and indeed Dr. Zahid Bukhari, served on my dissertation committee exploring Somali adolescents. Such a prolific and humble individual masha’Allah.

I am in touch with his family and have requested that they share any updates so that I may pass them along to our leadership. I have also assured his family that they should not feel they are alone in dealing with this on both the emotional and financial support levels.

If you are able to visit him, he is admitted to the main building of the Medstar Washington Hospital complex. Hospital garage parking is across the street. In the main building, you can check to be sure at the reception desk but as of yesterday (Monday), you simply had to take elevators marked “C/D” to the 2nd floor. Then look for the “H” wing, he is in 2H, room 4. Again, better to check with the reception in case they have moved him.

Wassalamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
