Islam is the world’s fastest growing religion with over three million U.S. followers of all ethnicities, backgrounds and sects. Yet most of us never equate Islam with common “American” culture, and oftentimes have a stereotypical view on who is Muslim and what being Muslim means. As allies and conscious citizens, we encourage you to join DC Muslims to partake in a one-day fast during Ramadan that serves as an opportunity to evaluate the ideas and bias that divide us, and refocus our attention on each other and our commonalities as human beings.
On June 29, OHR, Dar Al-Hijrah, KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights and many other partner organizations will host a one-day project that empowers the public across the District to share information about Islam as a faith, the diversity of Muslims, and ways to be a strong ally to our fellow Muslim Americans. Participants will wear “Fast With DC Muslims” pins, and will use talking points we provide to help explain to people why they are fasting when asked. But we need your help!
Muslims and allies are encouraged to register online for the project, signaling a commitment to act as a participant on June 29. Participants who register before June 19 will be mailed a “Fast With DC Muslims” participant packet, which includes:
A “Fast With DC Muslims”
FAQ sheet of instructions and additional information about the event.
If you are an individual who would like to register for the event and receive the “Fast With DC Muslims” participant package, visit fastwithdcmuslims. With your help, we can spread positive messages and raise the visibility of our Muslims neighbors and learn to be good allies.
