Happy Birthday AMERICA!!! From Your Fellow American-Muslim

July 5, 2016

The Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center joins our fellow Americans as we celebrate the birth of our nation, July 4th 1776.
Morocco was the first country to recognize the United States of America and became an ally protecting ships off the coast of Africa during the Barbary Coast Wars.

As Muslims we believe that our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, were influenced by the concept of freedom of religion by the treaty of Medina giving full citizenship to all, independent of their faith and affirmation in the Holy Quran stating “Let there be no compulsion in Religion”.

The first amendment of our constitution remains a beacon of hope to the world. This Wednesday, July 6th millions of American Muslims will celebrate the feast of the end of Ramadan, in peace and freedom.

We celebrate today knowing that Muslims played a leading role in the founding of our nation.

Eid Mubarak and Happy Independence Day America!!!

Dar Al-Hijrah Government Affairs Mets with Pres. Obama at Bmore Mosque

April 20, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

..:The Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center:..

Date: February 3, 2015

On Wednesday February 3, Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center’s Deputy Director of Government Affairs, Colin Christopher, met with President Barak Obama at the Islamic Society of Baltimore. Joining nine other young leaders from the American-Muslim community, Mr. Christopher spoke about the social and environmental justice work championed through The Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center’s outreach, social services, and youth departments. Mr. Christopher’s leadership on environmental issues within the Muslim community and the intersection of economic, racial, and environmental justice were the primary topics of discussion.

The Dar Al-Hijrah presented to President Obama a commissioned piece of Quranic calligraphy produced by Muhammad Zakaria, the author of the US Postal Service’s Eid stamp.

Home to Northern Virginia for over 32 years, Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center welcomes President Obama’s first visit to an American mosque since becoming president in 2008. Dar al-Hijrah has been at the forefront of building close relationships with an array of government officials at the county, state, and federal levels and believes that these partnerships are integral to building safe, successful and resilient communities.

An elated Colin Christopher called his family saying,

“I have just started as Deputy Director of Government Affairs at The Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center and in my second month I get to tell the President of the United States about my work, that’s a tremendous blessing!”

We are thankful for the President’s leadership and speaking out against racist anti-Muslim speech and violence against American-Muslims. We look forward to building even stronger partnerships with his administration over his remaining eleven months in office. The Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center will be hosting a voter education event the weekend before Super Tuesday in Virginia lto increase our civic engagement, strengthen our neighborhood, celebrate our diversity and ensure our community is informed regarding the American political landscape.

Dear Believers,

As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu wa maghfiratuh! Today I visited Dr. Sulayman Nyang and Quasim Williams. Dr. Nyang is still at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. However, he is not on life support or in ICU. Seventeen year old Qausim is still across the street at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital.
Alhamdulillah, Dr. Nyang is in a private room on a regular patient wing (4C room 3). He still has a trach tube in so he is unable to speak. He is quiet aware; while I spoke to him he blinked his eyes. As I was leaving I greeted him with ‘As salaamu alaikum’ and he returned the greeting – his lips moved – mouthing ‘wa alaikum as salaam’! Alhamdulillah! He has a long recover to go but he is well on his way! May Allah (SWT) bless him with a complete recovery! Ameen!

☮ Peace Salaam سلام : Dr Nyang update: Alhamdulilah his wife reports that he is able to comprehend instructions and showing improvement but still in critical condition. Still not accepting visitors. Please continue to pray for him.

Dar al-Hijrah Sustainability Committee Wednesday, February 10

Asalaamu Alaikum,

Tomorrow, Wednesday February 10 from 4-5:30 PM (Dar al-Hijrah Library) you are invited to join me and others environmental leaders in our community to discuss how to can collectively turn Dar al-Hijrah into one of the greenest mosques in North America insh’Allah.

Over the past few years, a number of individuals have put in considerable effort to work on green projects within the Dar al-Hijrah community. From Ramadan (and beyond) recycling programs to community gardens, Alhumudullilah community members have dedicated a lot of time and effort to growing closer to Allah through their service to our masjid. May their efforts and intentions be accepted. Ameen.

I am excited to announce a new initiative that seeks to combine our efforts into one committee. It is through our systematic collaboration insh’Allah that the sustainable practices of our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW can grow within our own hearts and spread to the brothers and sisters we prostrate besides in our prayers.

The idea here is the play the long game; to directly change the culture of Dar al-Hijrah to be one of moderate consumption and care for all of creation.

The committee format relies upon all segments of our community to participate–raising their voices, and acting upon their intentions.

Please be on time for the meeting. JAK

Virginia’s Redistricting Problem Still Under Review

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the new Virginia congressional district lines set by a federal court will be used for the upcoming federal elections. The Justices’ decision effectively denies a lower court petition to keep the previous district lines for 2016 voting. The old district map, created by the Virginia legislature after the most recent census, was criticized because of the way the 3rd district was drawn to include large communities of black voters in one district. Under the new map, over 1million voters have a new district designation. The Supreme Court is still considering the constitutionality of the old district map, and if a decision is issued later this year finding the old map is found to be legal it may cause mass confusion. Such a scenario would have Virginia officials scrambling to put together a third congressional election this year or to cause mass electoral confusion if the justices revert their decision later this year.
